Learning and perfecting bunny hops is a very useful skill to have in Portal 2-- If you want to get to the top of the leader boards, it's essential. Most people choose not to learn because it looks like a hard skill to pick-up, but it's actually fairly easy to learn the basics.
Let's get started.
Text from the video:
Before you start, you need to bind your mouse wheel to jump, you can do this in the developer console.
(To enable the developer console, go to options, keyboard, enable developer console)
Go to any level (non challenge mode)
Hit the `/~ button at the top of your keyboard to open the console.
Type "bind mwheelup +jump"
Hit enter
Then type "changelevel sp_a3_speed_ramp"
Hit enter
Now jump is bound to mouse wheel up, and you should be on your way to a good level for practicing this (you'll see why later).
(1) First, you should get used to jumping as soon as you touch the floor. This will help you maintain speed.
Hold forward and scroll-up to jump. As you descend (right before you hit the ground) scroll-up quickly until you jump again.
(2) Next, you need to learn to airstrafe. Doing this correctly will cause you to accelerate.
To do this: Hold a strafe key (A or D) and start jumping constantly (like you learned previously)(KEY PART)While doing this, move your mouse in the direction you're strafing.
If you're doing it correctly and at the right rate, you should hear special music (if you have music enabled) because the game thinks you're flying. (This only works on a few levels)
(3) Tips:
You shouldn't hit forward (W) at all after you've started airstrafing or you'll lose speed.
After you gain some speed, you'll have to widen your turns or you'll 'spin-out'.
Now that you have the basic idea down, you'll need to perfect it. Learn how to airstrafe both directions, then combine them both into bunnyhopping chains.
When you're starting a bunnyhop chain, hold foward, then strafe (let go of forward) and jump at the same time while air strafing.
Part 2 coming very soon!
